Who I am

I was born in Guadalajara Mexico but raised in Hamilton City California. I graduated High School in 1987 and thought I was ready for college. After two hard semesters I gave up. I'm not sure if it was the schoolwork or my laziness that made it hard. However, I can honestly say that I made the best of my free time. In my mind I figured I'd take off about two or three semesters, well, those two or three semesters ended up being close to 10 years. Like I said, I made the best of my time, even if it was 10 years. I worked full time in many types of jobs, got married, and started a family. But it wasn't until my last job as a dry cleaner in Chico that I finally decided it was time to go back to school. Not only was I tired of working so many hours for minimal pay, but I also was envious of most of my high school friends who hade already obtained their degree.

I graduated from CSU, Chico in the spring of 2004 with a degree in Business Administration with the focus being on Management Information Systems (MIS) and Productions Operations Management (POM). I have to admit that it was hard but if I had to do it all over again I would probably do it the same way. Why? My children. I really doubt I would have gotten married if I had stayed in school. In 1992 I married my beautiful girlfriend of 4 years (Christina), together we have three wonderful children, Andres, Joshua, and Lydia. It was for them that I pushed myself in all the hard MIS classes, and it was their happy faces that I reflected on when I was going through the rough times. Now that I'm finished, it is their smiles that I look forward to at the end of a long day.

My Interests

I love traveling with my family. It was hard when our children were young, but now that they have more patience in the car we're seldom home. One of our favorite places is the coast. My entire family loves the ocean. Every year we head there (Fort Bragg) for a week or so and enjoy the cool climate in the summer. Not only do I go there for the climate, but to build lasting memories with my children. In my heart, I hope they can keep this tradition once they have children of their own.

Why UB is Important to Me

Upward Bound is important to me because it provides the means for me to help and motivate many students to consider post-secondary school. As a first-generation college student I can relate to our participants and their concerns. Having "done it all" I feel I can offer help and advice to many of our participants when they have doubts about college. I can only hope that the participants not only hear my words but also listen to them.
